Saharanpur Accelerates 8 Mega Bridges to Ease Shakambhari Devi Pilgrimage
In a massive infrastructure and religious tourism boost for western Uttar Pradesh, the Uttar Pradesh Bridge Corporation has achieved 72 percent overall physical progress on eight strategic bridge projects underway across Saharanpur district. Engineered at a cumulative capital outlay of ₹233 crore, the road-over-bridges and river crossings are scheduled for phased commissioning between December 2026 and September 2027, unlocking uninterrupted mobility for more than 10 lakh local residents and regional commuters. Initiated under the development directives of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to upgrade pilgrim corridors around the renowned Siddhpeeth Maa Shakambhari Devi shrine, the newly built transit spans will permanently resolve severe waterlogging, flash flood hazards, and dangerous seasonal currents that previously washed away vehicles traversing hilly riverbeds during peak pilgrimage surges.
Crucial Shakambhari Devi River Spans and Yamuna River Crossings Near Completion
Among the most significant undertakings is the ₹46.79-crore project comprising two two-lane bridges, protective embankments, and approach roads connecting the Bhuradev temple to the sanctum sanctorum of the Maa Shakambhari Devi shrine across the seasonal hill torrent, which currently stands at 62 percent completion with a hard handover deadline of December 26, 2026. Simultaneously, structural and protective civil works on the Yamuna river along the Sondhebans route originating from village Alhanpur have reached 97 percent completion at a cost of ₹48.91 crore and are slated to wrap up by late November. The Bridge Corporation confirmed that robust financial allocations have prevented budget shortfalls, ensuring continuous round-the-clock site execution across every sanctioned river corridor in the district.
Railway Overbridges and Urban Transit Lifelines Advance Toward November Rollout
Urban commuter corridors are also slated for swift relief, led by the two-lane railway overbridge and approach road extending from Khan Alampura Yard to the District Magistrate's residence on the Nagal-Saharanpur railway line, which has achieved 91 percent completion at a cost of ₹28.09 crore and is scheduled for opening by the end of November. Along the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFCC) route on the Saharanpur-Ambala rail section at Shahjahanpur, another critical two-lane bridge built with an investment of ₹42.75 lakh stands at 96 percent completion and will be commissioned by late November. In Deoband, an 81-percent finished two-lane overbridge on the Deoband-Nanauta road near the railway station on the Meerut-Saharanpur section is progressing toward an August 2027 handover at an estimated cost of ₹33.05 crore.
Flood-Resilient Infrastructure: Maskarao River Bridge and Haridwar Rail Links Slated for 2027
Addressing seasonal drainage collapses, construction is advancing on a modern bridge and approach link replacing the damaged structure over the Maskarao River rainwater drain at Kilometer 15 of the Saharanpur-Chilkana-Gandewad highway, which is currently 54 percent complete at an expenditure of ₹6.91 crore and targeted for a March 2027 opening. Furthermore, construction spanning the Saharanpur-Nagal road and the Roorkee-Haridwar rail corridor has logged 33 percent progress with a financial outlay of ₹22.63 crore, eyeing a final completion target of September 2027. Together, these high-capacity bridge alignments will eliminate critical bottlenecks across inter-district highways, enhance economic logistics along rail freight paths, and provide a secure travel network for millions of pilgrims visiting western Uttar Pradesh's sacred shrines.
