The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has officially approved the construction of a brand-new, modern bridge across the Barua River to replace the aging 69-year-old structure. With a sanctioned budget of Rs 14.73 crore, this vital engineering project is designed to eliminate chronic traffic bottlenecks, enhance vehicular safety, and accommodate the surging volume of daily commercial and passenger traffic on one of the region's most important arterial highways.
The History and Traffic Strain on the Aging 1957 Barua River Bridge
Originally constructed back in 1957, the legacy Barua River Bridge—located at km 92,850 between Bhartikuup and Shivrampur on National Highway 35—has served the region for nearly seven decades. However, spanning only 72 meters in length with a restrictive carriageway width of just seven meters, the colonial-era structure has long outlived its optimal capacity. Handling an estimated 15,000 vehicles daily, the narrow bridge routinely chokes when heavy commercial trucks attempt to cross, triggering severe traffic jams and posing serious transit hazards for motorists and pedestrians alike.
Modern Specifications: Wider Lanes, Greater Length, and Dedicated Pedestrian Footpaths
Addressing long-standing public grievances, the newly approved bridge will feature vastly superior structural dimensions to ensure seamless traffic flow. The upcoming bridge will span an extended length of 90 meters and boast a width of 12 meters, a significant upgrade from the old narrow structure. Furthermore, to guarantee the safety of local pedestrians crossing the river stretch, 1.5-meter-wide dedicated footpaths will be constructed on both sides. By eliminating the existing roadway bottlenecks and widening the transit corridor, the new Barua River bridge will dramatically improve average vehicle speeds and overall commuting convenience along NH-35.
