Mayawati Slams Yogi Government Over Allahabad HC Stay on SC Reservation in 4 UP Medical Colleges

Post

A major political confrontation has erupted across Uttar Pradesh after the Allahabad High Court stayed the provision of additional reservation for the Scheduled Caste (SC) category in medical colleges located across Saharanpur, Ambedkar Nagar, Kannauj, and Jalaun districts. Reacting sharply to the judicial stay, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) national president and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati leveled serious allegations against the Yogi Adityanath-led state government, attributing the legal setback to flawed, half-hearted advocacy by state counsels. Championing the educational rights of marginalized youth, the BSP supremo urged the state administration to immediately move the Supreme Court to safeguard the interests of aspiring Dalit medical students.

Special Component Plan Funding and the 50 Percent Ceiling Argument

Taking to social media to voice her strong dissent, Mayawati pointed out that fundamental tenets of social justice and public welfare required the state government to present an unyielding defense in court. She underscored that the medical institutions in Saharanpur, Ambedkar Nagar, Kannauj, and Jalaun were specifically financed and constructed utilizing the Special Component Plan (SCP) budget, which was sanctioned to ensure the upliftment, welfare, and representation of the SC community. Consequently, she argued, providing additional reservation in these specialized institutions operates on a distinct legal footing that stands apart from the standard 50 percent reservation cap, embodying the true legislative intent of the Special Component Plan.

BSP Demands Supreme Court Challenge to Protect Dalit Medical Aspirants

The former Chief Minister asserted that had the state's legal machinery argued the foundational purpose of the Special Component Plan with appropriate vigor and constitutional backing, the High Court would have appreciated the historical context and refrained from staying the affirmative action policy. Criticizing the administration's legal lapse, Mayawati insisted that the government must not delay judicial recourse, demanding that it file an urgent appeal before the Supreme Court to vacate the stay and restore institutional quotas for Scheduled Caste candidates without jeopardizing their ongoing academic prospects.
