Major Setback for Asaduddin Owaisi as AIMIM Spokesperson Asim Waqar Joins Congress Ahead of UP Elections
Lucknow: The political landscape in Uttar Pradesh is witnessing rapid realignments and high-stakes defections as parties prepare for upcoming electoral battles. In a severe blow to Asaduddin Owaisi’s All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), the party's prominent firebrand national spokesperson and high-profile leader, Asim Waqar, officially severed ties with the organization. In a major political development on Wednesday, Waqar crossed over to the Congress party, marking a turning point in regional minority politics and sparking intense debate across political circles.
Asim Waqar Takes Congress Membership in Lucknow
Amid much anticipation, Asim Waqar formally embraced the Congress party fold during a high-profile joining ceremony held in Lucknow on Wednesday. He was inducted into the party in the presence of senior leadership, including Congress Uttar Pradesh in-charge Rajendra Gautam, state unit president Ajay Rai, and Member of Parliament Imran Pratapgarhi. The high-profile switch immediately shifted political equations, underscoring a growing sentiment among regional leaders regarding anti-BJP vote consolidation.
Direct Attack on AIMIM: "Are We Helping the BJP?"
Explaining his decision to leave AIMIM, Asim Waqar launched a scathing critique of Asaduddin Owaisi’s political strategy. He remarked that while the party frequently rhetoricizes fighting the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), its actions on the ground often target secular opposition parties like the Congress and the Samajwadi Party instead.
Waqar stated candidly, "All those who love India have only one intention: to overthrow the BJP government and establish a secular, public-friendly government. After being in AIMIM for so long, I felt that while we talk about fighting the BJP, we are not fighting them on the ground. At times, we are fighting the Congress, at others, the Samajwadi Party. We are fighting anyone who wants to oust the BJP. In such a situation, I wondered who we were helping if we were fighting the entire opposition."
Asserting that Rahul Gandhi, Ajay Rai, and the Congress machinery represent the primary forces aggressively challenging the ruling dispensation, Waqar emphasized that anyone splitting the anti-BJP vote indirectly aids the ruling party.
Congress Expands Base Ahead of Assembly Elections
The induction of Asim Waqar coincided with a wider influx of leaders from rival political outfits into the Congress party in Uttar Pradesh. Earlier in the week, multiple local leaders from the BJP and the Samajwadi Party hailing from Auraiya, Etawah, and Ghazipur formally took primary membership under the supervision of UP Congress joining in-charge Nitin Sharma. Notable figures crossing over included Durgesh Pratap Singh from the Samajwadi Party, alongside several local BJP leaders from Auraiya and surrounding districts.
Welcoming the new entrants, Uttar Pradesh Congress President Ajay Rai asserted that these strategic additions significantly strengthen the party's grassroots machinery. Expressing immense confidence, Rai declared that the united opposition coalition is fully prepared to dismantle the incumbent government and oust the BJP from power in the upcoming assembly elections.
