India's 2nd Vande Bharat Sleeper Set for Varanasi-Delhi Route on October 31

Post

Indian Railways is preparing to achieve another transformative milestone in premium overnight passenger transit with the rollout of the nation's second semi-high-speed Vande Bharat Sleeper Express on the high-density Varanasi-New Delhi corridor. Scheduled for an official ceremonial launch on October 31, 2026, the state-of-the-art train is expected to be flagged off from Varanasi Junction by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw. Engineered to drastically elevate comfort and cut travel hours between eastern Uttar Pradesh and the national capital, this indigenous sleeper rake will operate alongside legendary overnight services like the Shiv Ganga Express, Prayagraj Express, and Humsafar Express, offering passengers, entrepreneurs, pilgrims, and students an unmatched overnight hospitality experience.

Inaugural Schedule and Festive Welcomes Across Central UP Junctions

The formal launch ceremony in Varanasi will trigger celebratory receptions across Northern and North Central Railway divisions:

Inaugural Departure Timelines: On its inaugural run on October 31, the specialized ceremonial rake is slated to depart Varanasi Junction at 11:00 AM, making designated commemorative halts to greet travelers along the way.

Grand Receptions Planned: Grand civic and railway welcome programs are being organized across key intermediate railway junctions, including Prayagraj Junction, Kanpur Central, and Aligarh Junction, before the service enters New Delhi.

Imminent Notification of Final Schedule: While local operational divisions have mapped out preliminary runs, the Railway Board and Northern Railway administration are slated to release the finalized commercial reservation schedule and fare matrix shortly.

Proposed Timetable, Stoppages, and Six-Day Operational Frequency

Once commercial operations begin, the train will operate six days a week, excluding Saturdays, under a tailored overnight schedule:

Varanasi to New Delhi (Train No. 27421): The northbound service will depart Varanasi Junction at 8:50 PM, arriving at Prayagraj Junction at 10:35 PM; following a brief five-minute operational halt, it departs at 10:40 PM, touches Kanpur Central at 12:40 AM, and pulls into New Delhi station at 5:55 AM the following morning.

New Delhi to Varanasi (Train No. 27422): On the return leg, the southbound express will steam out of New Delhi at 9:40 PM, reach Prayagraj Junction at 4:45 AM the next day, halt for five minutes, and reach its final destination at Varanasi Junction at 6:45 AM.

Maximum Productivity for Daily Commuters: Arriving in the national capital before 6:00 AM allows legal professionals, corporate executives, and business travelers from Prayagraj and Varanasi to complete a full working day in Delhi without sacrificing daytime travel hours.

A New Era in Rail Travel: Superior Comfort Over Traditional Expresses

The induction of the second Vande Bharat Sleeper platform introduces next-generation engineering to long-distance Indian journeys:

Alternative to Legacy Rail Lines: The semi-high-speed overnight connection directly complements existing heavy-demand trains such as the Prayagraj Express and Shiv Ganga Express, easing the massive waitlists on the Varanasi-Delhi line.

Advanced Passenger Amenities: Outfitted with jerk-free semi-permanent couplers, superior sound insulation, ergonomic berths, touch-free sensor bio-toilets, and integrated Kavach automatic train protection systems, the rake sets a new benchmark for domestic overnight transit.

Strengthening Purvanchal Connectivity: Following the successful debut of the country's first Vande Bharat sleeper route, this addition reinforces central and eastern Uttar Pradesh's direct connectivity to the national capital, promoting regional trade, industrial mobility, and spiritual tourism.
