The stone-carved main entrance of the prestigious Mahayogi Guru Gorakshanath Ghat in Gorakhpur has suffered severe structural degradation within a mere five years of its inauguration, rendering it entirely unsafe for public use. Following safety audits and expert assessments, the Irrigation Department has finalized plans to demolish the compromised stone structure and construct a brand-new, highly durable Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC) main gate. The upcoming entrance is designed to be substantially wider, taller, and stronger than its predecessor, featuring elegant carved tiles and advanced piling techniques to ensure long-term structural integrity. Meanwhile, local authorities have cordoned off the area, and two sacred statues of Lord Shiva and Nandi previously mounted on the gate have been safely relocated to a nearby temple pending the completion of the new project.
Controversy Over Construction Quality, Jurisdiction, and Expert Oversight
The premature collapse and deterioration of the architectural elements have sparked serious accountability questions regarding the original execution of the 48.83 crore rupee beautification project along the Rapti River towards Nausadh, which began in March 2019 and was inaugurated on February 16, 2021. Questions have been raised regarding why the Irrigation Department undertook design-heavy construction without specialized expertise, utilizing chemical adhesives to join stones rather than conventional robust engineering methods. Compounding the issue, a bureaucratic dispute has emerged between the Irrigation Department and the Municipal Corporation over asset maintenance and handover logs, with the former claiming a formal transfer took place on October 9, 2025, while municipal authorities deny receiving the jurisdiction. The urgency for reconstruction heightened drastically after tragic incidents involving gazebo collapses prompted the Municipal Corporation to declare the entryway critically unsafe and post strict warning signage.
Multidisciplinary Expert Consultation and Accelerated One Crore Rupee Reconstruction Plan
To ensure absolute safety and prevent future structural hazards, engineering experts from premier institutions including IIT BHU, IIT Guwahati, and the Madan Mohan Malaviya University of Technology in Gorakhpur have been brought in for rigorous technical consultation. Although preliminary preparatory work has commenced, the physical demolition of the existing structure will proceed strictly in accordance with recommendations from a specialized committee constituted by the District Magistrate. Estimated to cost approximately one crore rupees, the rapid remediation project is slated for completion within a month, with engineers implementing alternative side-road access to minimize public inconvenience while restoring safety and grandeur to the landmark Gorakhpur riverside destination.
