Following recent controversies surrounding council schools in Prayagraj, Basic Shiksha Adhikari (BSA) Anil Kumar has officially submitted a comprehensive report to the District Magistrate, paving the way for formal First Information Reports (FIRs) against individuals spreading malicious misinformation on social media.
Crackdown Amid the "School Fix Karo" Campaign
Following the launch of the "School Fix Karo" campaign on August 15th aimed at assessing and improving the state of public education, authorities noticed an influx of misleading clips across various social media platforms. In a notable incident in Prayagraj, a user on the platform X shared claims alleging a severe lack of basic amenities—such as toilets, roads, drinking water, and electricity—at the Primary School Kuan in the Kaundhiara development block.
Taking prompt cognizance of the matter, Chief Development Officer (CDO) Harshika Singh directly contacted Principal Poonam Sahu to verify the infrastructure. The principal confirmed that all essential facilities were fully functional, the school's condition remained satisfactory, usable toilets for boys and girls were operational, and proper road connectivity, electricity, and clean drinking water were available.
Unmasking Manipulated Videos: The Kotwa Gram Panchayat Case
Addressing another viral video circulating on Facebook regarding an inaccessible access road in the Bahadurpur block, the BSA clarified that the footage was deliberately distorted. Investigations revealed that the video captured children from the Bind and Sonkar settlements of the Kotwa Gram Panchayat.
According to Mithilesh Tripathi, the acting headmaster of the upper primary school, heavy seasonal rains had temporarily caused pond water to overflow onto a paved road near the power station two days prior, an issue that was promptly cleared. He noted that while a secondary footpath was temporarily submerged, an alternate paved road to the campus remained fully accessible. Officials concluded that individuals deliberately forced children to wade through temporary rainwater logging solely to record and sensationalize a negative narrative.
Zero Tolerance Across Uttar Pradesh
The district administration has maintained that tarnishing the image of council schools through deceitful tactics will invite strict legal consequences. This follows similar punitive actions taken across Uttar Pradesh, including Meerut—where two youths, including a local political leader's son, were fined for filming misleading clips of the Upper Primary School in Kaland village—and Deoria, where formal criminal cases were registered against creators of unverified content. Authorities have urged citizens to verify facts before sharing sensitive institutional media online.
