In a targeted administrative intervention to untangle chronic traffic snarls across the historic city, the Agra district administration on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, formulated a sweeping mobility overhaul aimed at curbing the unregulated plying of three-wheelers. Convening a high-level inter-departmental coordination meeting at the Collectorate with senior officials from the Transport Department, Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (Roadways), and the Traffic Police, District Magistrate Manish Bansal reviewed urban bottleneck data and cleared the proposal to introduce a strict territorial zoning framework for all commercial auto-rickshaws and e-rickshaws operating within municipal limits.

Curbing MG Road Incursions: Strict Zoning and Ban on Right-Side Passenger Entry

A primary point of contention addressed during the review was the rampant violation of the pre-existing vehicular ban on Agra’s prime arterial stretch, MG Road, where unauthorized autos and battery-operated rickshaws continuously bypass regulatory curbs and choke crucial traffic intersections. Under the proposed zoning blueprint, the entire city will be demarcated into designated operational sectors, with vehicles assigned specific colored or numbered route permits to prevent random citywide wandering. To drastically reduce fatal road accidents caused by reckless disembarkations in moving traffic, the administration also resolved to enforce a complete statutory ban on passengers boarding or alighting from the right-hand side of autos and e-rickshaws, mandating rigid physical barriers on vehicle flanks.

Integration with Agra Metro: Three-Wheelers to Pivot as Last-Mile Feeder Networks

Recognizing the evolving mass transit landscape, DM Manish Bansal emphasized realigning three-wheeler operations to complement the newly expanding Agra Metro Rail network rather than crowding primary corridors. The transport and traffic divisions have been directed to chart dedicated last-mile feeder routes that channel commuters directly between suburban residential colonies and adjacent metro stations, restricting unorganized multi-passenger vehicles from encroaching onto heavily congested trunk roads. The strategic planning assembly was attended by Additional District Magistrate Yamunadhar Chauhan, Additional Municipal Commissioner Shishir Kumar, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Alka Singh, and Regional Roadways Manager BP Agarwal, all tasked with synchronizing field enforcement squads to implement the zoning guidelines immediately.
