In a breathless exhibition of joint tri-service agility and combat preparedness along the sacred waters of the Ganga, Indian Army commandos executed high-precision tactical slithering drills during the final dress rehearsal for the grand Varanasi Air Show on Wednesday, October 21, 2026. Hovering low over the rippling river waters, advanced military helicopters deployed elite troops directly onto the open deck of the luxury watercraft 'Manekshaw', captivating onlookers along the ancient ghats. The spectacular drill, captured in viral video footage, highlighted the armed forces' seamless integration across land, air, and water domains. With the premier three-day aerial spectacle set to roll out officially on October 22, 24, and 25, the historic city is witnessing an unprecedented synthesis of defense might, riverine logistics, and public aviation celebrations.
Heliborne Slithering Drill: Elite Commandos Touch Down on 'Manekshaw' Vessel
The rehearsal showcased the razor-sharp reflexes and rapid insertion capabilities defining India’s special operations units:
High-Speed Rope Insertion: Descending in swift succession via heavy-duty tactical ropes, the commandos touched down on the compact deck of the vessel while the heavy-lift chopper maintained a stable low-altitude hover above the Ganga currents.
Rapid Exfiltration of Aircraft: Immediately after offloading the tactical strike team onto the vessel's platform for ground-level simulated operations, the helicopter peeled away at high velocity, mirroring real-world maritime counter-assault deployments.
Public and Online Acclaim: Visual recordings of the troops sliding onto the moving ship deck have drawn massive online interest, with spectators at the ghats breaking into spontaneous applause at the raw display of precision and courage.
Floating Command Centers: Crucial Role of 'Manekshaw' and 'Vivekananda' Ships
Varanasi’s celebrated river tourism fleet has been formally integrated into the operational architecture of the air show:
Official Vessel Induction: Vikas Malviya, operator of Alaknanda Cruise Line, confirmed that both the 'Manekshaw' and 'Vivekananda' vessels have been co-opted for operational engagement alongside Indian Air Force personnel and district administrative top brass.
Waterborne Charioteers: Throughout the three-day showcase, these two flagship vessels will cruise the waters to provide mobile operational staging, dynamic commando deployment decks, and water-surface anchoring for visiting defense coordinators.
Tri-Service Demonstration Platform: The deployment of these watercraft offers an authentic canvas to exhibit the armed forces’ comprehensive capabilities spanning amphibian maneuvering, tactical riverine boarding, and integrated air-surface coordination.
Varanasi Air Show Schedule and Airspace Management
The city is bracing for three days of high-intensity aerial maneuvers along its riverfront:
Key Exhibition Dates: The main demonstrations of aerial combat power, synchronized aerobatics, and specialized commando maneuvers are officially scheduled to take place on October 22, October 24, and October 25, 2026.
Aviation Impact and Flight Delays: The rigorous airspace management required for combat jet and chopper rehearsals led to temporary operational delays for commercial carriers, with IndiGo and Air India Express flights held at Babatpur Airport as passengers waited aboard until designated airspace corridors reopened.
Unprecedented Riverfront Spectacle: Thousands of local residents, pilgrims, and domestic travelers assembled across the ghats are expected to witness fighter sorties, transport displays, and tactical commando insertions throughout the multi-day event.
