CM Grid Smart Roads Project Faces Delays as Residents Await Inaugurations and Completion
An ambitious initiative designed to transform urban transit and provide hi-tech infrastructure is currently testing residents' patience. Under the Chief Minister Green Road Infrastructure Development Scheme (CM Grid), roads across Gorakhpur are being upgraded into advanced smart corridors at an estimated cost of ₹340 crore. However, sluggish execution speeds, pending inaugurations for completed stretches, and prolonged digging in key commercial zones like Golghar have turned daily commuting into a frustrating ordeal for local residents and motorists alike.
Raptinagar Stretch Complete Yet Awaiting Inauguration After Two Months
While pockets of the city are still witnessing heavy construction machinery, completed segments are caught in bureaucratic limbo:
Raptinagar Completion: Gorakhpur's very first CM Grid road stretch in Raptinagar has been physically completed, offering a glimpse of modern urban infrastructure.
Pending Opening: Despite finishing construction roughly two months ago, the road remains un-inaugurated, prompting authorities to carry out minor touch-ups, including repairing loose tiles and clearing underground drainage systems.
Public Impatience: Local commuters have questioned why completed segments are kept cordoned off or un-inaugurated while surrounding areas remain choked with traffic.
Golghar and Kachari Areas Run Behind Schedule as Deadlines Shift
Project timelines across major commercial and administrative arteries have taken a significant hit due to prolonged delays:
Missed Deadlines: Construction work on CM Grid roads across the Golghar area was initially slated for completion by November. However, with heavy delays, officials now expect work to stretch into January.
Incomplete Infrastructure: Interconnections for several underground drains remain pending, while unfinished road surfaces disrupt smooth traffic flow across multiple junctions.
Postponed Culvert Work: To mitigate immediate public inconvenience, the construction of a crucial culvert near Kachari Square has been temporarily pushed back. Progress along the route stretching from Vijay Square via Hariom Nagar Square toward Ambedkar Square remains notably slow.
Official Stance and Project Scope: Features of CM Grid Roads
Defending the project trajectory, Chief Engineer Amit Sharma noted that construction has picked up pace now that monsoon rains have ceased, with Raptinagar finalized and work in Golghar moving forward actively.
The comprehensive infrastructure overhaul integrates futuristic civic amenities across approved stretches:
Modern Utilities: Underground utility ducts, advanced stormwater drainage, well-paved footpaths, organized parking bays, smart streetlights, CCTV surveillance networks, and dedicated e-charging stations.
Completed and Active Segments: The Raptinagar-Shahpur corridor (1.88 km, ₹44.88 crore) is complete, while routes from Kachari to Kali Mandir, Shivaay Hotel to Ganesh Square, and Shastri Chowk to Town Hall are advancing through various phases of construction.
Proposed Expansions: Future pipelines include stretches from Sports College Road, Golghar Kachari Chowk to Bettiahata Square, Gopalpur areas, Chargawan Ward-08, and the Pandeyhata-to-Rajghat route connecting the heritage corridor.
