Bhadohi Gets ₹127 Cr Multi-Stage Water Treatment Push Across Three Locations
In a major environmental intervention aimed at safeguarding the sacred Ganga river system, the Uttar Pradesh government has greenlit the execution of a comprehensive three-stage Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) project in Bhadohi district at a sanctioned cost of ₹127.26 crore. Geared toward treating contaminated urban and rural effluent entering the Morwa River and its tributary drains, the ecological infrastructure project has finally kicked off on the ground after being stalled for nearly six months due to procedural and technical bottlenecks in the tendering phase. Following intensive boundary surveys, site measurements, and perimeter fencing cleared by local revenue authorities, construction activities have formally commenced across three designated regional hubs to intercept, divert, and treat an aggregate volume of 25 million liters per day (MLD) of municipal wastewater.
Three Strategic STP Sites: Pipri, Dhaskari, and Rampur Sarroi to Intercept City Outfalls
The decentralized water treatment network is systematically partitioned across three localized plants to maximize wastewater catchment efficiency across the district. The flagship and largest facility, boasting a 17 MLD processing capacity, is being set up on a six-bigha land parcel in Pipri to neutralize domestic sewage discharged from the heavily loaded Mamdvepur and Naibazar outfall drains. A secondary 5 MLD treatment facility is earmarked for four bighas of land in Dhaskari to tap runoff originating from the Chauri Road drainage corridor, while a compact 3 MLD installation will be established over 28 biswas in Rampur Sarroi to treat untreated wastewater channeled through the Rajpura drain, preventing foul municipal runoff from overflowing directly into natural watercourses.
Halting Toxic Inflows: Restoring the Morwa-Varuna Aquatic Lifeline to Clean the Ganga
The urgency behind this high-budget sanitation push stems from severe pollution levels plaguing the Morwa River, an essential aquatic tributary meandering across the northern quadrant of Bhadohi district. Receiving approximately 20 to 25 MLD of raw municipal sewage and untreated discharge every single day, the Morwa continuously empties its toxic load into the Varuna River, which subsequently discharges directly into the Ganga downstream near Varanasi. First conceptualized three years ago, the ecological cleanup blueprint faced persistent delays in land demarcation before the Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam (Rural), Varanasi, finalized and submitted a comprehensive Detailed Project Report (DPR). With statutory hurdles resolved and execution underway, the integrated 25 MLD system will serve as a vital ecological shield, significantly reviving regional water bodies and reinforcing the broader national Clean Ganga mission.
