₹80-Crore Tech Upgrade with 7-D Galleries & Virtual Reality Coming to Agra's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Museum

Post

The Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department has launched an ambitious ₹80-crore technological overhaul to equip the upcoming Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Museum in Agra with immersive virtual reality, interactive exhibits, and cutting-edge 7-D experiential theaters. Located merely steps away from Shilpgram and the Taj Mahal, the sprawling cultural landmark is designed to showcase the valor of the Maratha ruler alongside Uttar Pradesh's vast civilizational heritage, with authorities issuing formal global tenders to finalize tech vendors before upcoming electoral code restrictions take effect.

7-D Experiential Escape: Reliving Shivaji's Historic Evading of Aurangzeb

The flagship highlight of the state-of-the-art museum complex will be an interactive gallery recreating Maratha history using modern immersive audiovisual effects:

The Great Escape in 7-D: The centerpiece gallery will recreate Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's legendary and daring escape from Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb's confinement in Agra using advanced 7-D motion simulation, multi-sensory lighting, directional sound, and specialized physical atmosphere effects.

Seven Interactive Galleries: Across the seven dedicated exhibition wings, visitors will interact with digital archives, touch-sensitive interactive displays, synchronized sound and light presentations, and virtual reality walkthroughs.

Tender Deadline on October 12: Regional Tourism Officer Shakti Singh confirmed that formal bids have been invited from leading technical and exhibition agencies, with October 12 set as the final deadline to ensure project allocation proceeds seamlessly.

Civil Infrastructure Milestone: ₹198.84-Crore Building Nears November Completion

While internal high-tech curation moves forward, civil execution on the structural complex has entered its final phases:

Built by Tata Projects: Spread over a 5.9-acre parcel near Shilpgram, the massive museum edifice represents a total infrastructure outlay of ₹198.84 crore, executed by Tata Projects with a targeted structural completion deadline of November 30.

Precast Engineering First: The site, previously home to a state electricity department factory, holds the distinction of being the first government structure in Uttar Pradesh built using precast concrete construction methods.

Timeline and Public Opening: While initial roadmaps targeted a public opening by December 2026, officials confirmed that specialized gallery installations, digital artifact mapping, and interactive trials will require approximately one full year, pushing the public opening to late 2027.

Beyond Maratha Valor: Showcasing UP's Spiritual and Cultural Tapestry

The comprehensive museum campus will also serve as an expansive storytelling hub for the state’s sacred geography and cultural traditions:

Weapons and Freedom Struggles: Curated spaces will display authentic ancient armaments and armor alongside an extensive documentary narrative of the 1857 First War of Independence.

Sacred Festivals of Uttar Pradesh: Visitors will experience thematic zones highlighting the Mahashivratri and Dev Deepawali spectacles of Kashi, the Braj region's Shri Krishna Janmotsav, and the historic Mahakumbh congregations of Prayagraj.

Riverine Civilizations and Local Agra Heritage: The galleries will celebrate the cultural lifeblood of the holy Ganga, Yamuna, Saryu, and Ghaghra rivers, concluding with a specialized Agra Gallery dedicated to the city's indigenous architecture, local crafts, and historic monuments.

Renamed by Yogi Adityanath: Originally conceived in 2016 as the Mughal Museum, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath rechristened the institution in September 2020 after Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, establishing the center as a monument to indigenous pride, cultural resilience, and national valor.
