Suspense crime, Digital Desk : The USA has declared its intentions to begin confiscating the visas of Chinese students whose ties relate to the People’s Republic of China and those studying admission's sensitive areas. This step is in line with the more strict controls placed on tracking foreign citizens entering the US.
Chinese Student Visa Policy Changes
In collaboration with DHS, Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a meeting where he indicated that the wielding of the hammer will take place in conjunction with the Department of Homeland Security. All applicants from Hong Kong or China will be subjected to background checks aimed at discrimination towards their region.
Rubio also called out other areas of China still remaining skeptical regarding the aim which is sleeking advanced technologies one might claim would be assisting the Chinese government.
Decrease in the number of Chinese students attending US institutions
The number recorded studying in the United States has more than halved within the last 5 years even having China’s aggressive diplomatic policies. In 2019 the number of students stood at approximately 370,000 and in 2024 is projected to be 277,000. This is primarily due to increased diplomatic hostility and increased scrutiny from American officials.
As part of the US immigration policies the American government is set to enforce stricter background rules alongside the already verified social media scans obtaining the Green Card.
Temporary Stoppage of Visa Appointment Scheduling
The DoS has also recently stopped new visa appointments for foreign exchange students and foreign students. This highlights yet another attempt by the administration to control underlying student inflows due to elevated geopolitical and security concerns.
Impact of US-China Relations
The politically fraught relations between the US and China continue to have implications on various fields, often extending to education, trade and also more worrying issues. With the strategic competition deepening, national security considerations are dictating more and more the frameworks of the immigration policy.
Chinese authorities have not issued a public statement about this change yet. Still, the measure is sure to have more negative consequences on the already strained bilateral relations and much needed mobility between the two countries.
