The imposition of U.S. tariffs is expected to severely impact the U.S. economy as other countries retaliate with high tariffs on American exports, according to Chinese state media. With another round of tariffs looming, Beijing has warned that it will consider additional measures, amplifying the ongoing trade conflict.
U.S. Trade Conflicts Escalate
Just two months after returning to the White House, President Donald Trump has sparked trade tensions with several key trading partners, including China, Canada, Mexico, and the European Union. The Trump administration is threatening reciprocal tariffs on any country that imposes taxes on U.S. imports, with these tariffs expected to begin on April 2, 2025.
China’s Retaliation and Global Response
In response to U.S. tariffs, China quickly implemented countermeasures in February and March as the first two rounds of Trump’s tariffs took effect. Should the upcoming April tariffs be enforced, China is widely expected to retaliate further.
According to the Global Times, a Chinese nationalist newspaper, other countries are unlikely to remain passive in the face of U.S. tariffs. The editorial suggests that many nations will retaliate by imposing their own high tariffs on U.S. exports.
China’s Countermeasures Against U.S. Goods
In addition to raising tariffs on U.S. agricultural products and food exports, China has implemented several other measures, including:
- Export and investment restrictions on 25 U.S. companies
- Suspension of soybean import licenses from three U.S. firms
- Halting imports of U.S. logs
- Launching investigations into U.S. fibre optic products
These moves are part of Beijing’s broader strategy to protect its interests and push back against the trade policies from Washington.
Beijing’s Efforts to Support Foreign Businesses
In an effort to stabilize the situation for foreign companies operating in China, the Chinese commerce ministry has announced plans to help these companies expand sales and mitigate the effects of external trade pressures. These initiatives aim to support businesses facing the impact of U.S. tariffs.
Global Shift Toward New Trade Alliances
The Global Times editorial also highlighted a trend where many countries are actively looking to diversify their economic ties, reducing their dependence on the U.S. by forming new trade alliances. This shift reflects the broader geopolitical and economic challenges arising from the ongoing trade disputes.
