France's Foreign Affairs Ministry reported that American Secretary of State Marco Rubio had a conversation with Minister of France’s Jean-Noel Barrot with regards to "seeking a closure on the Russia-Ukraine conflict". The State Department published this on Friday.
In their statement, they added: “‘The Secretary did also state President Trump’s staunch resolve to achieve through negotiations a fair and beneficial enduring peace, and noted that the United States will continue to engage with France to ensure this purpose is achieved.”
Not long ago Emmanuel Macron talked to his counterpart Donald Trump during the latter's visit to the White House.
Why is this significant?
The current president of the United States has openly declared his wish to terminate the ongoing war between Ukraine, which has been invading by Russia for the better part of three years, and Russia. Trump also mentioned that Europe needs to take charge of its own safety more actively.
Context
A week ago Trump had an astonishing meeting with the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office after which he decided to stop all military support and intelligence relaying to Ukraine until they agree to the ceasefire deal.
While European leaders supported Zelenskiy after his conflict with Trump, they shifted their focus onto the issue of the Russia-Ukraine war and the security of Europe which largely depends on the US president.
Trump has stated that he is “strongly considering” enacting broad sanctions, including restricting banking services and imposing tariffs on Russia until the Ukraine war sees a ceasefire and peace agreement.
