Shortly after the cessation of an Easter armistice, Russian forces commenced a sweeping drone and missile attack on southern and eastern Ukraine, hitting various cities including Odesa, and inflicting civilian injuries. This ramp-up of aggression comes historians US attempts to negotiate a peace agreement with the both conflicting nations.

Mayor of Odesa, Hennadiy Trukhanov reported that “the enemy targeted a residential area in a densely populated district of Odesa”, noting that a dense residential ward was heavily affected. Trukhanov also shared worrying footage depicting raging fires expanding through myriad buildings where windows and facades have been burnt.

According to regional Odesa governor Kiper, the systematic bombardment caused destruction to civilian housing and infrastructure, as well as vehicles and educational centers. He has expressed concern for the emregency services in charge of dealing with the destruction, as information about the possible casualties is still unverified.

From the CNN side, more recently Kherson’s Prokudin reported over three victims of bombing from the southern side region along with various people being wounded.

In the Mykolaiv region, “Explosions were heard”, the Mayor Sentkevych shared on his Telegram account. The full magnitude of destruction, however, is still uncertain.  

Donetsk is situated furthered east, where the regional head Filashkin reported four civilian casualties.  

The assault came after the inconspicuously declared Easter 30 hour truce by Russian president Putin. Both factions are claiming blame for the Korsak violation.  

Criticism surged after President Zelenksy claimed Russian aggressive actions are unbounded, stating, “Russia has broken the ceasfire nearly 3,000 times since the start of the day,” claiming that he stated to CNN the “Unfortunately that’s the reality.” Prior to that. Unfortunately, Zelensky had called for a month-long Russian backed truce, which was later dismissed and proposed by US suggesting.  

In accusations flying in both directions, it’s reported the Russian defence department declared Ukraine breached a thousand occurrences neutral ground controls while Putin made claims of suggesting 5000 unilateral Ukrainian breaches.

In the midst of the renewed assault, CNN stated that the US has put forth a new peace proposal which controversially recognizes Russia’s control over Crimea, which has been annexed since2014. The proposal would also institute a ceasefire along the current front lines. While US President Trump hoped an agreement could be reached, Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned that the US would likely abandon efforts for peace within days of no progress being made.

In his nightly address on Monday, Zelensky reiterated his stance alongside other officials from Kyiv with halting strikes on civilians and urged Moscow to match their energy as well. Reuters reported quote him stating, “Ukraine maintains its proposal not to strike at the very least civilian targets. We do expect a clear response from Moscow. What are they going to do? What are we going to talk about?”, Zelensky stated.

He also confirmed that a Ukrainian delegation will be traveling to London on Wednesday to meet with their western allies. Zelensky stated, “The primary agenda for the talks is to negotiate an unconditional ceasefire, which must be the foundation of the discussions.”
