Ahead of the Australia Open 2025, a big good news has come for Indian tennis fans. The organizers of the Australia Open released the list of the main draw for 2025 on Friday. In which the top 50 ranked players in the ATP and WTA rankings have been signed up. The main draw will start on January 12 and its final will be played on January 26. Now the good news for India is that Indian tennis star Sumit Nagal is set for his fifth appearance in the Grand Slam after getting direct entry into the main draw of next year’s Australian Open.
Did a big feat last season
Sumit Nagal’s world ranking is currently 98. He has been given direct entry into the main draw of men’s singles. Sumit Nagal participated in four Grand Slams in the year 2024 and reached his best ranking of 68. After making it to the main round from the qualifying stage in the last season of the Australian Open, he defeated 31st-seeded Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan 6-4, 6-2, 7-6 (5) in straight sets in the opening match. He then became the first Indian player to defeat a seeded player in the main draw of a Grand Slam after 34 years.
Djokovic’s name is also included in the list.
On the other hand, 24-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic has been seeded 7th in the men’s singles after a disappointing 2024 season. Djokovic capped his tennis journey by winning a gold medal at the Paris Olympics but failed to win a single ATP title this year. Meanwhile, fanfavoritee Australian Nick Kyrigos is set to make a comeback after missing out on the last two seasons with knee injuries. The 2022 Wimbledon finalist has been given a direct entry under the protected ranking.
