Bangladesh assistant coach Mohammad Salahuddin believes that young pacer Tanzim Hasan Shakib can increase his bowling speed by working on his run-up mechanics. Salahuddin has been closely working with Shakib at the BCB academy, fine-tuning his approach to the crease during his sessions in the Dhaka Premier League (DPL), where he represents Legend of Rupganj.

Addressing the Issue of De-Acceleration

Salahuddin pointed out a critical flaw in Shakib’s run-up—de-acceleration at the last moment—which may be affecting his pace.

"To generate force, key factors must align. When aiming for pace, acceleration is crucial. After observing Shakib’s run-up, I noticed he slows down at the final moment, which reduces his speed," Salahuddin explained to reporters.

He further added that this slight deceleration could cost him 1-2 kmph in speed. By ensuring a consistent run-up with smooth acceleration, Shakib could potentially increase his bowling pace.

Fine-Tuning the Mechanics

The key aspect of Shakib’s training involves maintaining an even stride length throughout his approach. Salahuddin emphasized that shortening the steps at the last moment signals de-acceleration, which in turn reduces speed.

"If he can maintain the same momentum throughout his run-up, his pace could increase by 2-5 kmph. This process is gradual, requiring step-by-step improvements," he added.

Shakib’s Perspective on the Changes

Speaking to Cricbuzz, Tanzim Hasan Shakib acknowledged that refining his run-up is essential for both speed and swing.

"I am working on having a smooth run-up because it is key to my success as a pace bowler. Carrying the same flow from start to finish is my goal," said Shakib.

He admitted that in his previous approach, he tended to slow down unconsciously, affecting his velocity and control. Now, he is focused on completing his run-up with consistent force, eliminating last-minute loss of momentum.

Gradual Progress and Future Impact

Shakib understands that implementing these adjustments will take time, but he is committed to improving steadily. He has already begun experimenting with his modified run-up in the ongoing Dhaka Premier League.

"It is a process, and I know it won't be fixed in a day. However, I am improving, and I believe once my run-up is smooth, it will also help me swing the ball better," he concluded.
