Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung announced on Tuesday that Taiwan is open to holding discussions with the United States about tariff issues at any time. The statement followed a steep market decline triggered by trade concerns.

Taiwan was recently hit with a 32% tariff. Former U.S. President Donald Trump highlighted Taiwan as one of the nations with a large trade surplus with the U.S., contributing to rising tensions.

Broader Trade Cooperation in Focus

Lin, speaking to the media outside parliament, said Taiwan is also prepared to talk about broader trade issues. These include U.S. investments in Taiwan, imports from the U.S., and reducing non-tariff trade barriers.

“As long as the time and format for negotiations are set, Taiwan can engage in discussions at any time,” Lin emphasized.

Stock Market Begins to Stabilize

Taiwan’s benchmark index, which experienced its worst-ever drop on Monday with a near 10% loss, showed signs of recovery on Tuesday. The index was down around 3% in morning trading.

TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company), the world’s largest contract chipmaker, also saw a smaller decline on Tuesday, with its stock dropping about 1% after a more significant fall the day before.
