A major breakthrough has been achieved by security forces in the Bastar division of Chhattisgarh. Just hours before the March 31, 2026, deadline set by the Union Government to eliminate Left-Wing Extremism (LWE), seven Naxalites have chosen to shun the path of violence and return to the mainstream. Notably, four of those who surrendered are women, signaling a significant internal collapse within the Maoist ranks.

Success of the 'Poon Narkom' Campaign in Dantewada

Bastar Inspector General of Police (IG) P. Sundarraj confirmed that the seven cadres surrendered at the Dantewada Police Lines. This success is attributed to the local police's flagship rehabilitation initiative, 'Poon Narkom' (New Dawn). Among the surrendered individuals, five were active members of the notorious Dandakaranya Special Zonal Committee (DKSZC), who had been a persistent challenge for security forces in the region.

Surrender of Naxalites with ₹9 Lakh Bounty

According to police officials, the surrendered cadres collectively carried rewards totaling ₹9 lakh. High-profile names include Some Kadti (reward of ₹5 lakh), a member of the Bhairamgarh Area Committee, along with Lakhma Oyam and Sarita Podium. These individuals admitted to being disillusioned by the hollow Maoist ideology and the exploitation rampant within the organization.

Massive Cache of Arms and Ammunition Recovered

Following the surrender, a massive cache of weapons was recovered based on information provided by the former cadres. The haul includes over 40 modern weapons, including SLR rifles, INSAS, and BGL launchers. This recovery is a severe blow to the military strength of the Naxalites and is expected to significantly cripple their operational capabilities in the coming months.

The Psychological Impact of Amit Shah’s Deadline

Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s declaration to make India 'Naxal-free' by March 31, 2026, has created immense psychological pressure on the ground. Evidence of this shift is visible as two other cadres in Kanker also surrendered recently with AK-47 rifles. With the combined pressure of intensified security operations and lucrative rehabilitation policies, Naxal cadres are increasingly realizing that their only options are to “surrender or be neutralized.”
