The Supreme Court expressed strong disapproval of the Uttar Pradesh government's handling of a 2021 demolition campaign, referencing a viral video that captured nationwide attention. In the video, an eight-year-old girl, Ananya Yadav, was seen clutching her schoolbooks and fleeing from a bulldozer as it razed makeshift homes in Ambedkar Nagar.
During a court hearing, Justice Ujjal Bhuyan commented on the emotional impact of the footage. “There is a viral video where a small girl can be seen outside a demolished house. Everyone is very disturbed by such visuals,” he remarked, as reported by Live Law.
Why Did Ananya Yadav Run With Her Books?
The footage was taken during an anti-encroachment operation in Jalalpur, Ambedkar Nagar, on March 21. Ananya Yadav, a Class 1 student at the Government Primary School in Arai, saw fire near the thatched shed where she had left her school bag. Inside were her Hindi, English, and math books—items she holds dear as tools to one day become an "IAS adhikari."
Speaking to The Indian Express, Ananya explained, “I returned from school and kept my bag in the chappar, where my mother had tied the animals. When a fire broke out in the neighboring shed during the demolition, I thought of my books and ran to save them.”
Her grandfather, Ram Milan Yadav, noted that their family had been residing on the two biswa of land for nearly 50 years. The demolition was reportedly based on an eviction order issued by the Jalalpur tehsildar court.
