Secretary Devajit Saikia Vows to Guide Young Sensation to Follow in Sachin Tendulkar's Footsteps
Indian cricket's administrative and coaching think-tank is taking unprecedented steps to nurture the country's next generation of sporting icons. Following a high-level review meeting in Mumbai, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Devajit Saikia emphasized that the board is closely monitoring 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, with the ultimate vision that he serves Indian cricket with the longevity and brilliance of legendary maestro Sachin Tendulkar.
High-Level BCCI Review Meeting Focuses on Youth Development
The strategic roadmap for Indian cricket's rising stars was front and center during Thursday's crucial conclave at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai. The high-profile gathering brought together top brass, including Secretary Devajit Saikia, national Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill, T20 captain Shreyas Iyer, head coach Gautam Gambhir, and Centre of Excellence (CoE) chairman VVS Laxman.
Addressing the media after the review, Devajit Saikia highlighted that the board is immensely proud to champion a 15-year-old prodigy making waves on the international stage. However, he stressed that careful institutional oversight is essential. "The board is very conscious that every step is taken in the right direction so that Vaibhav does not remain a hero of one series or one year. We want Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and other players of his caliber to serve the country for a long time, like Sachin Tendulkar did," Saikia stated, underlining the board's commitment to protecting young talent from burnout.
Record-Breaking Ascent: From IPL Stardom to International Records
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's meteoric rise through the ranks has captured the imagination of cricket fans worldwide. The teenage phenomenon recently etched his name in history by shattering a 57-year-old record to become the youngest batsman ever to score a half-century in the prestigious Duleep Trophy.
His stellar resume continues to expand: Sooryavanshi clinched the coveted Orange Cap in IPL 2026 by smashing 776 runs—featuring a magnificent century, five fifties, and a staggering 72 sixes. He further cemented his status as a match-winner by bagging the Player of the Series award after hammering 151 runs in a T20 International series against Zimbabwe, shortly after becoming the youngest Indian male player to debut in T20Is during a series against England. With every angle of his development now under close surveillance by the BCCI and the coaching staff, the stage is set for the youngster to script a historic career in blue.
