Shama Mohamed, a spokesperson of Congress, has come out in response to the controversy that roiled after she called Team India cricket captain Rohit Sharma a ‘fat spokesperson’ by stating that her comments are ‘generic’ and mentioned that such statements are her right in a democracy.

“I simply addressed it in a broad way. I do not comprehend how in a democracy we do not have the freedom to express,” said the Congress spokesperson.

The ‘clarification’ was issued when people started criticizing her on social media for comments she made during the Boarder- Gavaskar Trophy match between India and New Zealand on Sunday, which has now been deleted.

“Rohit Sharma is too fat to be a sportsman! He really does need to lose weight! And of course, the most unimpressive Captain India has ever had,” are her exact words that she posted.

These comments also stirred an intense political argument with the Congress party facing backlash from the BJP with the latter calling the comments ‘shameless’.

Pradeep Bhandari, spokesperson of the BJP, on the other hand, stated that ‘shame on Congress.’ Now they seem to be targeting the Indian Cricket Captain. Do they believe Rahul Gandhi must now resort to picking up a bat and becoming an Indian cricketer after his multitude of failures in Indian politics?

Shehzad Poonawalla, also a BJP spokesperson, said, “People who lost about 90 elections under the captaincy of Rahul Gandhi are now stating that the captaincy of Rohit Sharma is not upto the mark.” I guess 6 ducks in Delhi and 90 election losses is impressive but winning T20 World Cup isn’t! Also, Rohit has a brilliant track record as captain by the way.

Earlier, Mohamed refrained from fueling the Twitter exchanges with the sports journalist from Pakistan who referred to Sharma as a “mighty effective and world-class performer.”

He is by far the most overrated figure in the history of Indian cricket. If you take one look at his track record as a captain, you would realize that much. What really sets him apart from players like Ganguly, Tendulkar, Dravid, Dhoni, Kohli, Kapil dev, Shastri and the rest,” she said, “is just simply beyond me.
