28 fatalities and several injuries were reported when a terror attack took place in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. Tourists were attacked at the famous Baisaran Valley. The police now recognize Saifullah Sajid Jutt, a commander of Lashkar-e-Taiba, as the designer of this particular attack.
About Saifullah Sajid Jutt:
Saifullah Sajid Jutt reputedly also goes by the name Saifullah Kasuri and is reputedly from Shangamanga in Pakistan's Punjab. He has been branded as ‘hardcore terrorist’ by indian intellegence agencies. It is said that he is currently functioning from Islamabad and keeps strong relations with the ISI and military officials of Pakistan. Jutt hides his links to terror by using social welfare activityas his facade.
Details of the Attack:
A group of 40 local and foreign tourists were attacked in Baisaran Valley, Pahalgam. There were deaths on both the Indian and foreign sides. There is panic and widespread fear across the region because of this incident causing many tourists to vacate Kashmir. Resistance Front branch of Lashkar-e Taiba claimed responsibility for the attack.
Government Response:
In order to personally handle the issue, Prime Minister Modi chose to cut his trip short. He quickly returned, convening a high-level meeting where he condemned the attack, expressed condolences and assured that justice would be served. Amit Shah, the Home Minister of India, flew to Srinagar right away to assess the security infrastructure in place. Nirmala Sitharaman, the Finance Minister, also returned to India prematurely from her overseas assignment.
Security Measures and Reactions
As an immediate measure after the attack, security has been intensified within Jammu and Kashmir. Forces have been deployed to sensitive locations and searches are being carried out for the arrest of the suspected individuals. The government is also modifying its counter-terrorism policy to avoid such incidents in the foreseeable future. Various international leaders have expressed their support for India and have condemned the act of violence.
