This is the reason why Lakshmana's wife Urmila did not go to exile during the Ramayana period
Suspense Crime, Digital Desk : There are many stories from the Ramayana that people want to know about. One such story is the story of Lord Rama's brother Lakshman and his wife's sacrifice, the depth of which we all want to know.
The question arises: why did Lakshmana's wife not accompany him into exile? Urmila was the younger daughter of King Janaka and the younger sister of Sita, who was married to Lakshmana, the brother of Lord Rama.
When Lakshmana decided to go to the forest with Lord Rama and Sita, his wife Urmila also expressed her desire to go. At that time, Lakshmana urged Goddess Urmila to stay in Ayodhya and serve her parents. Let us tell you about the reasons why Urmila did not go to the forest.
Lakshman's wife did not go to the forest out of service.
The Ramayana mentions that when Kaikeyi requested 14 years of exile for Shri Ram, and he was ready to go to the forest with his wife, Sita, Lakshmana also decided to go. Lakshmana urged Ram to take him along. The reason behind this request was that he wanted to serve his brother and sister-in-law.
Lakshmana wanted to go to the forest so that he could constantly care for him and help him adapt to life in the forest. When Lakshmana went to meet his wife Urmila, she did not stop him from doing this religious work and expressed her desire to go to the forest herself. At that time, Lakshmana asked Urmila to stay in Ayodhya and also said that she should serve her parents in the palace. Due to this sense of service, Urmila did not accompany Lakshmana to the forest.
Urmila made a great sacrifice for fourteen years.
Maithili Sharan Gupt, in his Saket, extolled the great character of Urmila and told the story of her renunciation. However, in the Ramayana, Urmila is portrayed in a very minor role, and Lakshmana's dialogue with her is depicted as prioritizing serving her parents over staying in the palace.
It was indeed a tremendous sacrifice for a woman to spend fourteen years separated from her husband in the palace. In Saket, Urmila's character is described as the epitome of sacrifice.
In Maithili Sharan Gupt's Saket, these lines have been written showing the sacrifice of Urmila -
Urmila said, "O mind! Do not become an obstacle in the path of your beloved.
Now, abandon your selfishness and walk on the path of righteousness.
This is Lakshman's duty: to serve Shri Ram and Sita.
Urmila resolved not to become an obstacle for them."
In fact, Urmila's sacrifice was no less than that of Lakshmana who also gave up all his desires for 14 years.
