In a recent interview, Rakesh Roshan opened up about the terrifying experience he went through in 2000, when he was attacked by gangsters from the Budesh gang following the release of his film Kaho Na Pyaar Hai. Roshan, who is known for his directorial work in films like Koi Mil Gaya and the Krrish series, recalled how fear gripped him after the incident, and he began doubting his security arrangements.

Speaking to news agency ANI, Roshan revealed that during this period, he was constantly scared of even his own security personnel, wondering if one of them might harm him. He shared, "No matter how much security personnel are around you, you are still an open target. If someone wants to harm you, security personnel won’t be able to do anything."

The Heightened Fear and Security Measures

After the assassination attempt, which took place near his office in Santacruz, Mumbai on January 21, 2000, the government assigned two armed security guards to protect him. However, Roshan described how his fear increased when he had to sit in the front of his car, with his armed guards sitting in the back. “Woh do peeche baithe hain bandook ke saath. Kabhi kuch ho jaye voh peeche se na mujhe maar dein (Those two are sitting behind me with a gun. If something happens, they can kill me),” he recalled.

Feeling Claustrophobic Due to Security Detail

The Koi Mil Gaya director admitted that over time, the constant presence of his security detail began to affect him mentally. He even began to feel claustrophobic, as the guards would follow him during even the most personal moments, such as when he went for walks on the beach. He shared his growing discomfort, saying it left him feeling unsettled and trapped in his own life. Eventually, he requested for the security cover to be removed, expressing a desire to live without it and take life as it came.

The 2000 Attack and Its Aftermath

For context, Rakesh Roshan was the victim of an assassination attempt in 2000, when two assailants opened fire at him near his office. One bullet struck his left arm, and another grazed his chest. He was rushed to the hospital and underwent emergency surgery, making a full recovery. Investigations revealed that the attack was orchestrated by the Budesh gang, allegedly due to a dispute over extortion demands.
