SGPC Chief Harjinder Dhami Demands CBI Probe, Delegation to Meet Punjab Governor in 3 Days

Escalating pressure on the state administration over the sensitive Sri Anandpur Sahib incident, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has formally demanded an independent Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe to ensure complete transparency. Addressing media personnel in Amritsar following an interim committee meeting, SGPC President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami sought an official response from the Punjab government regarding the CBI inquiry and announced that a high-level SGPC delegation will meet the Governor of Punjab within three days to submit their formal representation.

While the Punjab Police continues its investigation into the incident, the apex gurdwara body has initiated an internal departmental inquiry:

Five-Member Inquiry Committee: The SGPC interim board has constituted a dedicated five-member committee tasked with examining every aspect of the Anandpur Sahib episode impartially and submitting a comprehensive fact-finding report within a designated timeframe.

Approaching the Governor: To ensure an uncompromised probe beyond administrative jurisdictions, an SGPC delegation is scheduled to meet the Punjab Governor within 72 hours, urging the Raj Bhavan to direct a central agency investigation.

Accountability from State Authorities: Dhami questioned the state government’s current stance, emphasizing that only an exhaustive probe by the premier central agency can bring unvarnished facts before the Sikh community.

Slamming Social Media Trials: Dhami Questions Political Motives Behind Protests

Reacting strongly to ongoing public demonstrations and online criticism, Dhami cautioned against sensationalism and trial by internet media:

Presumption of Innocence: The SGPC chief stated that assigning guilt or passing judgments before a competent court delivers its verdict is completely inappropriate and counterproductive to justice.

Allegations of Orchestrated Campaigns: Dhami alleged that motivated falsehoods and protests are being manufactured to malign the SGPC and target his leadership. He openly invited aggrieved groups and protesters to meet him directly to discuss their grievances, while questioning whether vested political interests are operating behind the agitations.

Divergent Sikh Voices: Meanwhile, several Sikh organizations have voiced reservations regarding the impartiality of the SGPC’s internal probe panel, demanding an external, autonomous investigation to maintain communal confidence.

Dhami also reflected on the extensive outreach carried out during the Miri-Piri Khalsa March, which was flagged off from Sri Akal Takht Sahib to commemorate the Miri-Piri Day of the sixth Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib:

Devastating Toll of Substance Abuse: Public sentiment in every hamlet echoed deep distress over the rampant drug menace. Dhami cited a harrowing account from a village in Sangrur where local residents reported losing around 40 young lives to drug addiction.

Youth Embracing Sikh Values: Amid the widespread campaign, numerous youngsters in rural belts took solemn pledges to connect with the Sikh faith and reject narcotics.

Call for Expedited SGPC Elections and Updates on Rajoana Meeting

The SGPC chief concluded his briefing by touching upon broader structural issues confronting the institution:

Fast-Tracking General Elections: Dhami urged the authorities to expedite the long-pending general election process for the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, asserting that timely elections are necessary to bring clarity and constitutional strength to the apex body.

Meeting with Balwant Singh Rajoana: Providing details about his recent jail visit to death row convict Balwant Singh Rajoana, Dhami clarified that their conversation centered strictly on matters of principle. He disclosed that Rajoana conveyed his readiness to face capital punishment and confirmed the withdrawal of his petition seeking commutation of his death sentence to life imprisonment.
