Former Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi Alleges Political Conspiracy Behind University Protests

The political landscape of Punjab has intensified following recent unrest at Lovely Professional University (LPU). Weighing in on the controversy, former Punjab Chief Minister and senior leader Charanjit Singh Channi launched a scathing critique, alleging that the violent protests and subsequent incidents on campus were part of a calculated political conspiracy orchestrated after LPU founder and Member of Parliament Ashok Mittal aligned with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Channi Alleges Direct Political Targeting of LPU

Addressing media persons, the former Chief Minister expressed grave concern over the breakdown of law and order and the handling of the situation by state authorities. Channi claimed that the institution became a political target immediately following its leadership's shift in political affiliation:

The BJP Factor: Channi asserted, "LPU founder Ashok Mittal joined the BJP, and after that, the Aam Aadmi Party government tried to destroy the university."

Outside Agitators and Hooliganism: Alleging that external elements infiltrated the campus to create chaos, Channi stated that outsiders entered the university premises and engaged in unchecked hooliganism under the passive gaze—or active support—of local law enforcement.

Massive Financial Losses: Highlighting the severe economic fallout of the campus disturbances, Channi raised questions regarding the staggering estimated damage, asking, "According to reports, there has been a loss of around Rs 100 crore, so who is responsible for this?"

Condemning Police Action Against Students

Beyond the political fallout, the former Chief Minister sharply criticized the high-handed response of the police forces deployed during the student demonstrations:

Brutality Against Students: Channi questioned the justification behind the forceful actions and alleged brutal beatings inflicted upon students during the protests.

Call for Accountability: Demanding immediate administrative transparency, he asked why no penal action had been initiated against police officers and personnel involved in the excessive use of force, and why the state government failed to manage a volatile situation in a timely manner.
