Political protests took a uniquely symbolic turn in Jalandhar as senior Congress leaders and party workers organized an 'onion langar' in the bustling Master Tara Singh Nagar market to draw public and governmental attention to soaring inflation. Spearheaded by municipal councillor and Congress leader Dr. Jasleen Sethi alongside District Congress President Rajinder Beri, the demonstration served as a sharp critique of both central economic policies and state-level inaction regarding the skyrocketing costs of essential household items.
'Onion Langar' Highlights the Financial Burden on the Common Man
The eye-catching protest involved distributing onions to citizens while calling out the relentless rise in everyday living expenses. Addressing the gathering, Dr. Jasleen Sethi stated that essential commodities have become entirely unaffordable for the common man, middle class, and impoverished families. Pointing out the steep price hike, she noted that vegetables and staples like onions—which traditionally retailed at ₹10 to ₹20 per kilo—have surged to ₹60–₹70 per kilogram, while everyday essentials such as cooking gas and pulses witness continuous upward pricing.
Congress Targets Central and State Governments Over Inaction
During the demonstration, the Congress leadership placed direct blame on both the central government and the Punjab administration for failing to curb inflation. Rajinder Beri echoed these sentiments, asserting that poor governance and flawed economic management have left families struggling to make ends meet. Escalating their protest strategy, local leaders announced that the District Congress is preparing to organize a similar 'sugar langar' in the near future to spotlight a staggering 70 percent surge in sugar prices.
The demonstration drew participation from numerous prominent party workers and local activists, including Kishan Lal Malik, Yogesh Handa, Kimti Saini, and Anu Gupta, uniting local voices in a demand for immediate economic relief.
