In a gruesome act of terrorism, a serene meadow in Pahalgam, Anantnag District of Jammu and Kashmir was attacked, resulting in the death of 28 innocent civilians. Among the deceased were 22 domestic tourists, two foreign tourists, two locals, and an Indian Navy officer. This is the most deadly attack on civilians in Kashmir since the abrogation of article 370 in 2019.

An acclaimed holiday destination was turned into a site of devastation on Tuesday, when militants opened indiscriminate fire on a group of tourists. The attack evoked widespread outrage across the entire nation.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, in a statement on his official X (formerly Twitter) account expressed sympathy and grief, offering condolences to the families of the deceased. He made it clear that those who committed this “dastardly act” will “suffer the harshest consequences.” Shah maintained that the government’s stance advantage will remain unyielding in dealing with terrorism.

The Pahalgam attack adds to the list of the already heinously tragic list of the Kashmir’s genocide. Above is a timeline chronicling some the most notable terrorism targeted towards civilians in recent history of this region:
In March 2000, 36 Sikh were murdered in Chattisinghpora village located in Anantnag.
August 2000: 32 Amarnath pilgrims were killed at Nunwan base camp including 24 in one attack.
In July 2001, 13 Amarnath yatris were killed during an attack at Sheshnag.
In October 2001, CCTV footage captured the footage of a suicide attack on the Jammu & Kashmir state legislature complex in Srinagar, killing 36 people.
2002 witnessed the killing of 11 pilgrims at the Chandanwari base camp.
In November 2002, a secondary explosion at Lower Munda killed 19 in an IED blast, 9 of which were security personnel.
March 2003 marks the date Nandimarg, Pulwama witnessed the massacre of 24 Kashmiri Pandits.
June 2005 hosted a car bombing in Pulwama: the attack claimed 16 lives and left over a hundred injured.
In June 2006, a horrific incident in Kulgam led to the demise of nine laborers hailing from Bihar and Nepal.
July 2017 saw an armed attack on an Amarnath Yatra bus in Kulgam where eight people were shot dead.
Apart from the attacks directed towards civilians, members of the security forces have been frequent targets too. Deaths in the 2019 Pulwama suicide bombing soared to 40 Indian soldiers and is known as one of the deadliest strike against armed forces of the region.
