Opera, a browser company from Norway, has recently launched an AI Assistant titled Browser Operator which can handle tasks across various websites on your behalf. The concept is that Browser Operator is capable of performing some monotonous online tasks on behalf of a user, thus saving time and clicks. For example, a user could ask it to place the next grocery order, look up hotel rates in a specific location, and then inform the user of the airline rates and latest tariffs.
Opera’s Browser Operator: Summary in Short
In the words of Krystian Kolondra, EVP at Opera’s, “Once and for more than 30 years, the browser served as an entry point to the web but rarely if ever could it get anything accomplished on its own. Now it does. This is completely different from anything we have encountered or even deployed.” He adds, “The Browser Operator we are showing today is the first step in what we believe is the change in the role of a browser from a display engine to that of an intelligent application that takes orders and performs tasks on behalf of users.”
The AI tool is currently relied upon by users in the latest preview release as it executes commands. However, the pause operator urges the user for input on sensitive tasks, for instance when making a payment or entering a login password.
During MWC 2025, Opera showcased different activities such as choosing a pair of socks from Walmart, purchasing tickets to a football match on the official website, and even booking flights and hotels through Booking.com. All these activities are expected to be accomplished by Browser Operator without any action from the user. The feature is expected to be available shortly to users through Opera's Feature Drop, while wider availability is anticipated later this year.
