The Tamil Nadu Crime Branch-CID (CB-CID) has apprehended a 28-year-old man from Rajasthan for allegedly generating and circulating a sophisticated artificial intelligence (AI) deepfake video featuring Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. Identified as Shaybu Khan, a resident of Laxman Nagar in Alwar district, the accused was taken into custody on September 12 following a coordinated raid conducted by a specialized CB-CID team alongside Rajasthan local police. Following his arrest, authorities secured a prisoner transit (PT) warrant to bring Khan back to Tamil Nadu, where he was remanded in judicial custody. Investigating officers seized crucial electronic evidence during the operation, including multiple mobile phones, active SIM cards, and a CPU utilized to generate and distribute the fraudulent material designed to cheat vulnerable citizens under the guise of fake government financial assistance programs.
Cross-Border Tracking Underway: Suspected Pakistani Facebook Networks Fueling Financial Aid Cyber Frauds
The scam unraveled during routine cyber surveillance when Tamil Nadu Crime Branch cyber forensic units flagged viral Facebook video clips showcasing an AI-generated digital avatar of Chief Minister Vijay with a synthetic Hindi voiceover. The deceptive videos systematically coaxed viewers to reach out to specific WhatsApp contact numbers to secure direct financial grants, operating as a front for an extensive cyber fraud syndicate. Further digital forensics led investigators to identify identical manipulated videos originating from foreign Facebook profiles suspected to be operated from Pakistan. To eliminate the fraudulent content and track down collaborators within the cross-border digital network, special police enforcement units were dispatched to both Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, with ongoing technical efforts centered on identifying the overseas handlers spearheading the disinformation campaign.
