PM Modi Flags Off ₹13,000-Crore Projects, Rides Chennai Metro Phase-2 with CM Vijay
Marking a major infrastructural boost for southern India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday dedicated and laid the foundation stones for multi-sectoral development projects valued at over ₹13,000 crore across Tamil Nadu. The comprehensive launch encompasses urban rapid transit, national highway corridors, regional railways, maritime trade infrastructure, petroleum refining, and advanced medical research. Highlighting the high-profile visit to the state capital, PM Modi inaugurated the newly completed Poonamallee–Vadapalani stretch of Chennai Metro Phase-2—constructed at an investment of around ₹4,900 crore—and undertook a ceremonial metro ride alongside Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay from Porur Bypass Station to Poonamallee Bypass Station.
Chennai Metro Phase-2 Expansion: ₹4,900-Crore Poonamallee Stretch Opens
The commercial launch of Chennai Metro's western corridor provides rapid connectivity to densely populated industrial and IT clusters:
Poonamallee-Vadapalani Commercial Launch: Built at an estimated cost of ₹4,900 crore, the commissioned stretch establishes high-speed transit across western arterial nodes of Chennai.
Joint Metro Ride: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay boarded the metro train at Porur Bypass Station, traveling together to Poonamallee Bypass Station while reviewing phase-wise network integration.
Easing Urban Congestion: The elevated corridor drastically cuts commuter transit times across major traffic junctions, offering a reliable alternative to congested suburban road routes.
₹3,700-Crore National Highway Corridors: NH-744 Four-Laning & City Bypasses
To enhance logistics efficiency and inter-district trade transit, the Prime Minister launched several major highway projects:
Vadugapatti–Therkuvenganallur Section: Inaugurated the 36-kilometer-long, four-lane section of National Highway-744, unlocking faster travel between key regional pilgrimage sites, agrarian belts, and industrial hubs.
Madurai Ring Road Stretch: Dedicated the 30-kilometer-long, four-lane Madurai Ring Road stretch of NH-744A, diverting heavy highway transit to de-congest interior city roads.
Tiruvarur Four-Lane Bypass: Laid the foundation stone for the four-lane Tiruvarur Bypass along the Nagapattinam–Thanjavur segment of NH-83, establishing a critical bypass around the heritage municipality.
Upgrading Railways Across the State: Amrit Bharat Stations & Rail Flyovers
Over ₹750 crore has been injected into upgrading passenger amenities, regional rail lines, and level-crossing safety:
Karaikal-Peralam Restoration: Dedicated the restored Karaikal–Peralam railway line to the nation, restoring key coastal rail connectivity and spiritual transit corridors.
Coimbatore Rail Flyovers: Handed over three new railway overbridges (ROBs) in Coimbatore and adjoining areas, eliminating prolonged waiting times at busy level crossings.
Amrit Bharat Station Upgrades: Formally unveiled five redeveloped Amrit stations featuring upgraded passenger facilities at Palani, Vellore Cantt, Ambasamudram, Paramakudi, and Namakkal.
Maritime Ports, Energy Infrastructure & Groundbreaking IIT Madras Tech
The development package extends well beyond surface transit into advanced blue-economy logistics, energy self-reliance, and cutting-edge brain research:
Chennai Port Upgrades: Commissioned an expansive storage yard, four modern EXIM warehouses, a modernized International Cruise Terminal, and a dedicated Seafarers Club.
V.O. Chidambaranar & Kamarajar Ports: Dedicated eight multi-crore development projects, opened Coal Berth-3, and initiated capital dredging works at Kamarajar Port to handle mega-container vessels.
CPCL Lube Oil Project: Laid the foundation stone for the ₹1,620-crore Lube Oil Base Stocks (LOBS) unit at Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited's refinery to expand domestic petrochemical capacity.
Deep-Tech Breakthroughs at IIT Madras: Launched the Sudha Gopalakrishnan Brain Centre (SGBC), announced the Global 3D Brain Mapping Mission, and unveiled 'C-STROKE', a world-class stroke atlas designed to advance neurological healthcare.
