As Parliament’s high-stakes monsoon session enters its final four crucial days, intense political maneuvering is gripping New Delhi. The central government is actively working behind the scenes to secure the numbers needed to push the much-discussed Delimitation Bill through the House. With the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) falling short of the required two-thirds majority on its own, the spotlight has shifted squarely onto the 22 Lok Sabha members of the "neutral" DMK. Number Game in Lok Sabha: Why DMK Holds the Key to the Delimitation Bill
Passing a constitutional amendment like the Delimitation Bill requires the support of two-thirds of the members present and voting in the House. With the current effective strength of the Lok Sabha at 540 members (accounting for three vacancies), the ruling government needs roughly 350 to 360 votes to cross the finish line.
Currently, the NDA's base strength stands at around 326 MPs, bolstered by recent additions from regional parties, including defectors from the Trinamool Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), Jagan Mohan Reddy’s YSR Congress, and independent lawmakers. However, this leaves the ruling coalition short of the required two-thirds threshold. This arithmetic makes the 22 MPs of Tamil Nadu's ruling DMK absolute kingmakers. Political analysts note that since parting ways with the Congress, DMK chief M.K. Stalin has increasingly focused on regional state interests, opening a window of opportunity for the NDA to court the party's backing—especially as Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju links the delimitation exercise directly to the rollout of women's reservations.

On the other side of the aisle, the opposition INDIA bloc is facing its most formidable political stress test in the 18th Lok Sabha. Having previously rallied 230 MPs against the delimitation measure in April, the opposition's numbers have dwindled to around 189 following fractures with the TMC, Shiv Sena (UBT), and the shifting stance of the DMK. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, opposition leaders like Congress Chief Whip in the Rajya Sabha Jairam Ramesh have urged the government to avoid repeating past tactics of mass suspensions, as both sides engage in a fierce tug-of-war to secure regional alliances.
