Political tensions in West Bengal have escalated dramatically following fresh legal action against former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Kolkata Police have officially registered a suo motu First Information Report (FIR) against Mamata Banerjee and the organizers of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) Chhatra Parishad. The case stems from alleged severe violations of a strict Calcutta High Court directive during the student wing's foundation day program held on Cathedral Road on August 28. Law enforcement authorities claim that rally participants breached official boundaries, engaged in scuffles with police personnel, dismantled security barricades, and caused massive traffic disruptions by extending the event beyond the permitted timeframe.
Kolkata Police Register Suo Motu FIR at Hastings Police Station
According to official reports from the Hastings Police Station, the case has been formally registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and IPC, including sections 61(2), 223, 125(a), 132, and 285. Police investigations allege that former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the West Bengal Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (WBTMCP) organizers partook in a criminal conspiracy by openly flouting judicial mandates.
The Calcutta High Court had explicitly ruled that attendance at the August 28th gathering must be strictly capped at 1,500 people, and a designated portion of Cathedral Road must remain completely open for regular public traffic. However, authorities state that supporters forcibly removed barricades, manhandled on-duty law enforcement officers, and gridlocked traffic across a major arterial route, prompting immediate legal scrutiny.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari Confirms Directives for Legal Action
Reacting sharply to the unfolding events, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari addressed the public and media, confirming that he personally instructed the state police to take strict legal action. Highlighting the incident, Chief Minister Adhikari stated that former CM Mamata Banerjee deliberately bypassed judicial boundaries.
Adhikari asserted that despite clear instructions to keep a portion of the road open, large crowds were summoned and positioned under trees to intentionally block traffic and cause public inconvenience. Emphasizing zero tolerance for lawlessness, Adhikari noted that he instructed the police department to file a formal FIR and prepare to approach the High Court regarding the blatant disregard for judicial protocols.
