'Instead of catching the thief, lock the victim's door': Rahul Gandhi's scathing attack on the Modi government over the Telegram ban
Suspense Crime, Digital Desk : Instead of catching the thief, lock the victim's door, a scathing attack on the Modi government by Rahul Gandhi on the Telegram ban. On a note of concern over irregularities and paper leaks in the NEET-UG examination, the Central Government has imposed a temporary ban on the very popular instant messaging app Telegram in India. This particular move, however, has led to widespread outrage in the political circles. Rahul Gandhi, leader of the Congress party and leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha, has strongly slammed the Narendra Modi government and the ruling party over this ban.
Rahul Gandhi on the ban said -instead of catching the thief, lock the victim's door.
On the request of the National Testing Agency (NTA), the Government of India decided to temporarily block access to Telegram in India till 22nd June 2026. Expressing great disapproval over the move, Rahul Gandhi took to X to write, "Paper leak ke khilaf Modi sarkar ki nai chaal.Instead of catching the thief, lock the victim's door."
Rahul Gandhi added on behalf of students that millions of students throughout the country used Telegram to prepare for the entrance examinations by accessing notes, test series, and taking group discussions. He stated as to how taking away this service from students could lead to solutions for paper leaks.
'Will the next ban be of Whatsapp?'
Gandhi also expressed reservations regarding the success of the Government measure. He added that this tactic was not fool-proof and every child in the country along with the paper leak mafia knew about it. He sarcastically inquired as to what further ban would the Government be considering if this one did not work, a ban on Whatsapp?
On a note regarding the heavy checks and tight security arrangements in the examination halls on the examination day he stated that students would be frisked on the examination day. Even the students' pockets would be cut out using scissors. The questions papers would be sent through air. It seemed that there would be no lack of drama. But, he said not an attack would be made on the roots of the problem because the paper leak mafia was enjoying all under the nose of the Modi government and were bleeding the youth to death. The Prime Minister, Rahul Gandhi, advised, stop all this tamasha and strike the paper leak mafia directly not the students.
Why did the government ban telegram?
The controversy comes as the NEET-UG 2026 examination is to be held on the 21st of June, after it had been annulled previously. National Testing Agency (NTA) had requested the government of India to impose a temporary ban on Telegram, citing that organized cheating mafia and rackets were fooling and tricking students. Following this request, the government was obliged to impose the ban from 20th June 2026 till 22nd June 2026.
Telegram approaches Delhi High Court
The interim ban was immediately challenged by Telegram. Telegram had moved to the Delhi High Court to challenge the interim ban imposed by the Central government of India. Telegrams' lawyer, Madhav Khosla, pleaded for a hearing on this issue before the vacations bench of the High Court which was listed for hearing on that very day.
