Suspense Crime, Digital Desk : IPS officer Mahesh Dixit has been appointed the new director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB), India's premier internal intelligence agency. He will replace current IB Director Tapan Deka and will serve a two-year term. Tapan Deka's term ends on June 30.

According to the Personnel Ministry, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has granted extension to Mahesh Dixit under the provisions of FR 56(D) and Rule 16(1A) of the All India Services (Death-cum-Retirement Benefits) Rules, 1958. He will hold the post for a period of two years from the date of assumption of charge or until further orders.

Mahesh Dixit is a 1993 batch IPS officer. A Telangana cadre officer, Dixit spent most of his career in the IB. He currently serves as its Special Director. He is considered one of the most experienced intelligence officers in the country.

After earning his doctorate, Dixit pursued a career in law enforcement. During his career, he held several important assignments related to counterterrorism, national security, and intelligence operations.

Played an important role in Jammu and Kashmir after the abrogation of 370

Before being promoted to the post of Special Director at the intelligence agency headquarters in New Delhi, IPS Mahesh Dixit was the Assistant Chief of the Intelligence Bureau in Jammu and Kashmir. As the bureau chief, he played a key role in the aftermath of the abrogation of Article 370 on August 1, 2019.

Oversight of the G-20 Tourism Working Group Meeting

IPS officer Mahesh Dixit played a key role in intelligence assessment and security planning during the transition period in Jammu and Kashmir. He also oversaw key intelligence responsibilities during the G-20 Tourism Working Group meeting held in Srinagar in 2023.

His diplomatic skills have seen him handle a variety of sensitive assignments, from operations in the Northeast and Ladakh to anti-Naxal cells. Dixit is known for his strong ground intelligence network and expertise in counter-terrorism within the IB.

Mahesh Dixit was promoted to Special Director of the Intelligence Bureau last year, making him the second-highest-ranking officer in the intelligence agency. He will replace Tapan Kumar Deka, who has led the Intelligence Bureau since July 2022.
