The heightened scrutiny follows a security breach on September 4 at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi, where three Italian nationals traveling from Amritsar on an Air India domestic flight managed to board a Lufthansa connection to Munich without completing mandatory international immigration clearance. The ministry confirmed that Air India has been slapped with a formal show-cause notice, and the airport personnel responsible for the breakdown have been placed under suspension. The hub-and-spoke system—designed to allow seamless international transit where origin stations handle customs and immigration—is currently active across Amritsar, Varanasi, and Ahmedabad airports to ensure smooth passenger transitions without compromising national border integrity.
