MK Stalin, Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister, was quite vocal about having couples in the state having children straight after marriage. By using this statement, he tried to emphasize on how the state is suffering by having good family planning policies.
Stalin made this comment regarding Indian Census delimitation on March 4th 2023 with all parties in mind during an all party meeting and further elaborated on how the southern states of India tend to get “marginalized by this entire exercise". He has containd said that all southern states will “lose their dominance in the Lok Sabha” if delimitation is done by the census.
“I used to say take as much time as you need to have a child. Now I in opine that the complete opposite is true. Having put into place st family planning, now we are suffering because of it. Therefore, instead of saying take your time, it should be the opposite.” Stalin then goes on to say that he hopes people will put their feelings of superiority to the side and actually listen to his advice.
On February 25, Stalin pointed out that the adoption of family planning practices in Tamil Nadu had proven successful, but now places the state at an unfavorable position. “In applying delimitation based on census population, Tamil Nadu stands to lose eight MPs. This will result in Parliamentary representation being reduced for the state,” he had said.
However, the BJP argues that Tamil Nadu will be taken care of by the center as heard from Union Home Minister’s recent visit where he said the number of Lok Sabha representatives for the state will not be cut down.
Stalin went on to say that 40 political parties which were registered with the Election Commission of India have been called for a meeting to discuss the issue of delimitation of constituencies on March 5.
Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana are among the states which have either repealed or said they will repeal laws and regulations that seek to control or promote population growth. Bharat Rashtra Samiti's KT Rama Rao has lately supported the issues of Stalin and suggested that instead of population, the delimitation exercise should be done based on the GDP contribution of each state.
