On Friday, a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar, causing widespread panic and destruction. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the quake’s epicenter was located approximately 10 kilometers below the surface.

Tremors from the earthquake were felt across neighboring countries, including Bangkok in Thailand and parts of Vietnam, prompting emergency responses and building evacuations.

Destruction Reported Across Myanmar and Thailand

Initial visuals show buildings collapsing in Myanmar, with significant damage to infrastructure. Among the key structures destroyed was the Awa Bridge, along with several other buildings in the region.

In Bangkok, an under-construction building of the Office of the Auditor General (OAG) collapsed completely. Alarms were triggered in high-rise buildings, forcing shocked residents and hotel guests to evacuate staircases in densely populated areas of the city.

Emergency Response Initiated in Thailand

In response to the quake, Thailand’s Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra convened an urgent emergency meeting. Authorities are currently assessing damage and preparing for aftershocks.

Rescue teams and emergency services have been deployed in affected areas to assist with safety measures and damage control.
