Suspense crime, Digital Desk : Love the idea of driving an electric car but get nervous thinking about long trips and finding charging stations? Mahindra is working on a game-changing solution to end that "range anxiety" once and for all.

The Indian auto giant is developing two powerful new SUVs that offer the best of both worlds: a pure electric driving experience with the safety net of a petrol engine. These upcoming models, the sleek Mahindra BE.6 and the stylish XUV.e9, aren't typical hybrids. They are being engineered as range-extender electric vehicles.

How Does It Work?

This technology is a clever twist on hybrid design. Here’s the simple breakdown:

  1. Purely Electric Drive: Unlike traditional hybrids, the wheels of these SUVs will be powered exclusively by a strong electric motor (expected to be around 200 horsepower), giving you that silent, smooth, and instant acceleration of an EV.
  2. A Power Station on Board: A small, efficient 1.5-liter petrol engine is included, but it has only one job: to act as a generator. It never directly drives the wheels.
  3. The Best of Both Worlds: You can plug in and charge the large 60 kWh battery at home for your daily city driving. But when you're on the highway or running low on charge, the petrol engine automatically kicks in to generate more electricity for the battery, letting you keep driving without ever needing to stop for a plug.

This innovative approach means you get the quiet, eco-friendly performance of an EV for most of your trips, combined with the freedom to go anywhere without worrying about your battery's range.

What to Expect:

  1. Mahindra BE.6: A stylish SUV with a modern, coupe-like design.
  2. Mahindra XUV.e9: A dynamic and futuristic-looking compact SUV.

By developing these range-extender vehicles, Mahindra is building a practical bridge for Indian consumers who are eager to switch to electric but are held back by concerns over charging infrastructure. It's a bold strategy that could redefine the electric vehicle transition in the country.
