Suspense crime, Digital Desk : Prominent filmmaker Karan Johar has launched a sharp and candid critique of the current state of the Hindi film industry, identifying what he believes is its biggest flaw: a pervasive "herd mentality" driven by a "deep lack of conviction."
During a recent roundtable discussion, Johar pointed out that the industry is plagued by a follow-the-leader approach, where originality has taken a backseat to imitation. He observed that if one type of film—be it a biopic, a small-town story, or a high-octane action movie—finds success at the box office, a flood of similar projects immediately follows. "Everybody is grappling to do what others are doing," he stated, describing a creative environment where filmmakers are too afraid to forge their own paths.
He attributed this trend to the deep-seated insecurity that has gripped Bollywood post-pandemic. With the pressure to deliver a guaranteed hit higher than ever, many producers and directors are opting for safe, proven formulas rather than taking creative risks. According to Johar, this has resulted in a significant "lack of conviction" in original ideas and unique storytelling.
Johar argues that this copycat culture is the industry's most significant challenge today, leading to a homogenized product that fails to excite audiences in the long run. He believes the real path to success lies in backing a director's unique vision and having the courage to tell a new story, rather than simply replicating what worked for someone else.
His comments serve as a powerful call for introspection within the industry, urging his peers to break free from the cycle of imitation and rediscover the creative courage that defines powerful cinema.
