Suspense crime, Digital Desk : Veteran actor Kamal Haasan has found himself facing scrutiny from the Karnataka High Court over a recent comment where he referred to Tamil and Kannada as "elder and younger sister languages." The remark, made during a promotional event for his upcoming multilingual film "Kalki 2898 AD," prompted a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) from a pro-Kannada organization.
The organization argued that Haasan's statement was divisive and could potentially stir unrest and disharmony between the people of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. During the hearing, a division bench of the High Court, comprising Chief Justice NV Anjaria and Justice KV Aravind, questioned the necessity and appropriateness of such a remark, especially coming from a prominent public figure during a film promotion.
The court reportedly asked Haasan's counsel, "What was the necessity for him to make such a remark? Is he an expert on languages?" They also questioned whether the film's producers endorsed this statement. The bench highlighted the potential for such comments to create "unnecessary controversy" and affect the relationship between the two states.
While expressing its reservations about Haasan's statement, the court also questioned the petitioner's decision to file a PIL. It suggested that if the organization felt genuinely aggrieved or that the remark caused damage, a civil suit for damages might be a more appropriate legal avenue. The court also noted the timing of the PIL, which was filed after the remark was made, questioning why preemptive action wasn't considered if there were concerns about potential statements.
Ultimately, the High Court advised Kamal Haasan to exercise caution with his words, emphasizing that public personalities should be mindful of the impact their statements can have. The matter underscores the sensitivities surrounding linguistic and cultural identities in the region.
