Commuters traveling between Jharkhand's Santhal Pargana region and North Bihar have received a major sigh of relief. The Bihar government has officially decided to postpone the scheduled removal of the Bailey bridge built on the damaged section of the Vikramshila Bridge in Bhagalpur, ensuring that vehicular traffic will continue uninterrupted past August 29.
Rising Ganga Water Levels Prompt Decision
The temporary Bailey bridge was originally slated for removal to make way for the construction of a permanent truss bridge. However, due to the rapidly rising water levels in the Ganga River and looming flood concerns, authorities chose to put the project on hold until further notice.
With upcoming festive seasons and potential flood risks in the horizon, the state government prioritized smooth public movement over structural replacement work, halting restrictions that would have otherwise choked vital transit routes.
Massive Relief for Godda and Santhal Pargana Districts
The decision brings immediate respite to residents and commercial drivers across Godda, Sahibganj, Pakur, Dumka, Deoghar, Jamtara, and surrounding Santhal Pargana districts.
Transport operators and local motorists noted that hundreds of four-wheelers and two-wheelers traverse the Vikramshila Bridge daily to connect Seemanchal and North Bihar. Had the bridge closed, commuters would have been forced to take massive detours via the Munger Bridge or Farakka Bridge, leading to severe congestion and transit delays. Local bus operators and daily travelers have welcomed the move, emphasizing that maintaining connectivity through the festive months is crucial for regional commerce and travel.
