Out of Jharkhand's 24 districts, 23 are grappling with significant dry spells, with West Singhbhum remaining the sole district defying the trend by recording a 9 percent surplus. The agricultural hub of East Singhbhum is feeling the severe pinch of the monsoon's indifference, having registered 506.7 mm of rainfall against its normal benchmark of 600.6 mm. This 16 percent deficit, translating to a 94 mm shortfall, has dealt a direct blow to local farming communities. According to recent reports from the Agriculture Department, paddy transplantation across the district has barely reached the 50 percent mark. Agricultural experts note that July and August are critical windows for rice cultivation, and without adequate water standing in the fields, farmers are unable to complete timely sowing, raising fears of a drastic decline in overall production.
