Trump Criticizes India’s Tariffs During 'Liberation Day' Announcement

During his speech at the White House marking "Liberation Day," Trump remarked, “India, very, very tough. Very, very tough. The Prime Minister just left. He's a great friend of mine, but I said, ‘You're a friend of mine, but you’re not treating us right.’ They charge us 52 percent.”

Trump's comments referenced Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Washington in February 2025, soon after Trump was sworn in for his second term.

As India reviews its trade position, further diplomatic engagement is anticipated to ensure fair trade terms. Both countries are expected to continue discussions, with India aiming to protect its export competitiveness while managing trade tensions.
