India has decided to send a team of 80 personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to support relief and rescue operations in earthquake-affected Myanmar, official sources confirmed on Saturday.

This international deployment is part of 'Operation Brahma', a humanitarian mission launched by India to assist its neighbor following the high-intensity earthquake that struck Myanmar and Thailand on Friday.

The NDRF team is equipped with specialized quake rescue tools and is expected to reach Yangon by Saturday evening. A Commandant-level officer will lead the operation.

India’s Swift Response: Aid and Personnel Dispatched

15 tonnes of relief supplies, including medical kits and essentials, were sent from India to Myanmar on an Indian Air Force C130J aircraft.

This marks India's third international deployment of NDRF personnel, following their missions in the 2015 Nepal earthquake and the 2023 Turkiye quake.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed concern over the extensive damage and loss of life, stating that India stands ready to provide all possible assistance to Myanmar and Thailand.

Myanmar Earthquake Impact

The earthquake has resulted in significant damage to infrastructure—destroying buildings, bridges, and essential services.

Reports indicate that over 1,000 people have lost their lives in Myanmar alone.

India’s relief effort comes in light of its 1,643-km-long shared border with Myanmar, emphasizing the strategic and humanitarian importance of bilateral cooperation in times of crisis.
