Suspense crime, Digital Desk : Hyderabad is gearing up for a significant cultural and religious event as the historic Sri Simhavahini Mahankali Temple in Laldarwaza, Old City, has announced the dates for its 117th annual Bonalu festival. The vibrant and deeply traditional celebrations are scheduled to commence on July 11th, promising a period of fervent devotion and grand festivities.

K Venkatesh Goud, Chairman of the temple committee, along with other committee members, unveiled the detailed schedule for this much-anticipated festival. The celebrations will officially begin with the 'Dwajarohanam' (flag hoisting ceremony) on Thursday, July 11th.

The main event, the offering of 'Bonalu' to the Goddess Mahankali, will take place on Sunday, July 21st. This is a key day where thousands of women devotees, dressed in traditional attire, carry decorated earthen or brass pots (Bonam) filled with cooked rice, jaggery, and curd as offerings to the deity.

Following the Bonalu offerings, the 'Rangam' (oracle prophecy) is scheduled for Monday, July 22nd. During Rangam, an unmarried woman, believed to be possessed by the Goddess, foretells events for the coming year. Later that day, the 'Ghatam' procession, a symbolic representation of the Goddess, will be taken out from the temple, traditionally culminating at the Musi River. This procession, often accompanied by the 'Palaharambandi' (a decorated bullock cart carrying sacred offerings), marks the conclusion of the temple's Bonalu celebrations.

Bonalu is a significant folk festival predominantly celebrated in Hyderabad and Secunderabad as a thanksgiving to Goddess Mahankali for her blessings, and to pray for continued peace, prosperity, and good health.

In preparation for the large-scale event, which draws massive crowds, Telangana's Minister for Animal Husbandry, Talasani Srinivas Yadav, recently visited the Laldarwaza temple to review the arrangements being made by the temple authorities and government departments. The temple itself has a rich history, having received grants even during the Nizam's era, highlighting its longstanding importance in the region's cultural fabric. Various cultural programs are also expected to be part of the extended celebrations.
