Frustration boiled over in Ambala as hundreds of sanitation workers took to the streets on Saturday, staging a powerful broom march along the National Highway to voice their long-standing grievances. The protesting workers marched directly to the private residence of senior Haryana cabinet minister Anil Vij, demanding urgent government intervention to fulfill their unfulfilled promises of permanent employment. Carrying brooms in their hands as a symbolic gesture of their daily labor and ongoing struggle, the workers demanded that the state government honor the agreements made on May 13 and put an end to years of contractual exploitation.

13 to 14 Years of Waiting and Unmet Core Demands

The central issue raised during the vociferous protest was the complete lack of job regularization. Employee leaders confronted Minister Vij, pointing out that not a single sanitation worker, sewer cleaner, or firefighter has been made permanent across the department in the past 13 to 14 years. While government representatives claimed that several administrative demands had been met, union leaders strongly countered that none of their core, primary demands—specifically job security and permanent status—have been addressed. The workers questioned why other government sectors receive regular appointments while sanitation workers remain trapped in temporary contracts despite risking their lives daily.

Minister Anil Vij Assures Dialogue With Chief Minister

Responding to the agitated protesters outside his Ambala residence, Minister Anil Vij listened to their grievances and assured them of his support. While traffic on the National Highway experienced temporary disruptions due to the massive march, Vij engaged directly with the delegation. He stated that he would discuss their concerns with the higher echelons of the state government and urged them to maintain dialogue, remarking that his full strength is with them and that they are welcome to meet him anytime to resolve the deadlock.
