A prime example is the tangled love story of Govinda, Neelam Kothari, and his wife, Sunita Ahuja, which came to light through Govinda's own startling admission in a throwback interview.
The story, resurfacing from a 1990 issue of Stardust magazine, details the peak of the on-screen and off-screen chemistry between Govinda and Neelam. The duo was one of the most beloved pairs of the late 1980s, and Govinda admitted he was deeply in love and intended to marry her. He was captivated by her grace and class, which contrasted with his own more rustic background.
However, a major secret loomed over their relationship: Govinda was already married.
In the candid interview, Govinda revealed that he had tied the knot with Sunita Ahuja in a secret ceremony, a decision he had made based on his mother's wishes. Fearing that the news would ruin his relationship with Neelam and potentially harm his burgeoning career, he chose to conceal his marital status from everyone, including Neelam herself.
"I played dirty," Govinda confessed in the magazine. "I started telling [Neelam] 'I'll get married to you soon. I'll get married to you soon.'" He admitted to exploiting her trust while he was a married man.
The deception eventually came to an end when Neelam learned the truth, leading to the heartbreaking end of their relationship. Govinda recounted how he broke down after Neelam decided to end things for good.
Despite the turmoil, Govinda and Sunita Ahuja have remained married for over three decades. This throwback story remains a classic piece of Bollywood lore, offering a raw and revealing look into the complexities of love, ambition, and celebrity life in a bygone era.
